Gauchos Finish Close Second at Bill Cullum Invitational

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara golf team finished 14-under par and were a close second at the 2017 Bill Cullum Invitational which was completed at the Wood Ranch Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.

The Gauchos' 850 was two shots off the pace set by red-hot Utah State which finished with a 16-under par 848.

UCSB led the tournament after each of the first two rounds, but the Aggies made up much of the 12-shot first round deficit by shooting a tournament-best 276 in the second round. They made up the rest of the difference in the third round as they carded a 281, four shots better than the Gauchos' 285. The top two team finishers were the only schools in the tournament to each have four players finish among the top-16 in the individual standings.

Santa Barbara was paced by Matt Moomjian, who recorded a 4-under par final round to finish at 3-under for the tournament, good for a 10th-place tie. It was Moomjian's best finish ever. A pair of his teammates finished one shot back of him. Brandon Bauman and Nick Swanson each completed their three rounds at 2-under par to tie for 12th. Brett Bennett was also in the vicinity as he finished at 1-under par, good for 16th-place.Tyler See was the fifth Gaucho player and he finished at 5-over, tying for 39th in the field of 91 competitors.

Long Beach State (9-under par) and Cal State Fullerton (6-under par) finished third and fourth respectively and they were the only other schools to finish the tournament under par.

Fullertn's Derek Castillo ran away with the individual medalist honors. After shooting an even-par 72 in the first round, he carded 7-under par in each of the last two round to finish at 14-under, seven shots better than UC Irvine's David Kim. Utah State's Braxton Miller and Cal State Northridge's Felix Mory tied for third at 6-under.

UCSB will play its final fall tournament when it travels to Pebble Beach, Calif., to play in the Saint Mary's Invitational on Nov. 6-8. The tournament will be played at the Poppy Hills Golf Course.
