Gauchos Sweep UC San Diego in Dual Meets
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UCSB swim and dive teams posted a pair of dual meet victories over visiting UC San Diego on Friday afternoon at Campus Pool. The men came from behind to edge out the Tritons, 154-140 and the women posted a 173-127 win.
The Gaucho men were trailing by eight points entering the final individual event: the 400 individual medley. Randy Aakhus (4:03.89), Evan Simoni (4:06.95) and Andrew Barmann (4:11.46) swept the top-three finishes in the event to gain the Gaucho lead.
On the women's side, the UCSB women got off to a strong start in the first swimming event - the 200 medley relay. The UCSB 'B'‚ team finished first with Sophia Yamauchi, Paige Bradley, Emma Hunt and Mariah Tharp touching the wall in 1:48.13. The 'A'‚ team quickly followed, finishing in 1:48.50.
Andrea Ward led the way for the Gauchos, winning three individual events. She began with a win in the 200 free (1:51.73), captured first in the 100 free (52.20) and then rounded out her program with top finish in the 500 free (5:04.51).
Sophia Yamauchi also won multiple events, taking first in the 100 backstroke (56.91) and then the 100 butterfly (56.19). Monica Garcia won the 1000 free (10:38.98), Katie Records won the 100 breast (1:06.47) and Kendall Neely won the 50 free (24.63) to round out the Gaucho individual event winners.
UCSB wrapped up the women‚s events with a first-place finish by Emma Hunt, Mariah Tharp, Emily Stucky and Sophia Yamauchi in the 200 free relay (1:30.39).
Meanwhile, in diving, several UCSB divers competed at the Trojan Diving Invitational at USC. In the women's 1-meter competition, Caila Baltas finished 23rd with a score of 175.30. The male divers had some solid finishes. Ryan Gerard was 16th with a score of 207.90, Erich Brodbeck was 18th at 184.85 and Nicolas Grantham was 20th with a tally of 162.20.
Gaucho divers also took part in the platform competition. Baltas was 16th among the female divers with a score of 119.30. On the men's side, Gerard finished 12th at 166.50. Grantham was 13th at 155.90 and Brodbeck finished 14th at 146.90.
