Gaucho Sprinters Shine on Second Day of Pac-12 Championships

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – Between the 50 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay, the UCSB swimming team's sprinters were busy on the second day of the Pac-12 Swimming Championships, being held through Saturday at East Los Angeles College.

Chris Peterson had the highest individual finish for UCSB as he touched fifth in the 50 free. He swam the second fastest time in the event's prelims (19.65) and touched in 19.90 seconds in the evening swim. 

Garrett Thompson tied for 11th with a time of 20.09 and Kevin Ferguson placed 15th in 20.44 seconds; he touched the wall in 20.09 during the morning's prelims.

Wade Allen, Kevin Kuhn and Steven Ewoldt all qualified for the 50 free 'C' final. Allen finished second in the heat and 18th overall with a time of 20.15 seconds. Kuhn finished 19th in 20.43 (20.35 in prelims). Ewoldt touched 21st in 20.47 seconds (20.42 in prelims).

In the men's 500 free, Andrew Barmann qualified for the 'C' final after posting a time of 4:28.15 in the event's prelims. He finished 23rd overall during his evening swim with at time of 4:29.75.

Evan Simoni and Randy Aakhus each qualified for the 'C' final in the 200 individual medley. Simoni took 21st overall (1:49.87) and Aakhus touched 22nd in a time of 1:49.90.

Thursday's finals concluded with the 200 free relay. The Gaucho team consisting of Peterson, Allen, Thompson and Ferguson finished fourth with a time of 1:18.54.

After two days of competition, UCSB is in seventh place with 107.5 points, just a half of a point behind Arizona State. Stanford is dominating the field with 324.5 points. 

Action at the 2012 Pac-12 Swimming Championships continues on Friday.
