SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - In a big matchup between two of the nation's top-10 teams, the No. 8 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team fought against No. 1 USC but came up short losing 6-3 at Campus Pool.
Tommy Fellner, Josh Jordan, and Spencer Wood led the team in scoring with one goal apiece. On the defensive end, Fellner picked off two steals while Shane Hauschild pulled three, and behind them defensive anchor Justyn Barrios had a busy day racking up 12 saves.
USC came out quick in the first half with the Trojans going on a 4-0 scoring run before the Gauchos answered back with Fellner scoring their first goal in the second quarter at the six minute mark ending USC's run and bringing the lead down 4-1.
For the rest of the second quarter both teams sprinted back and forth for another goal. Barrios came up big in this quarter keeping the opposing team from making any fast break points. However, the trojans managed to slip one more goal in near the end of the quarter to make the score 5-1 going into the halftime break.
USC came out in the second half scoring one more goal in the fourth quarter at the 5:16 mark to bring their lead up 6-1. The score seemed to be set in stone as the game winded down, but the gauchos surprised the Trojans with Jordan and Wood scoring two quick goals in the last minute of play to bring the score down 6-3 at the end of the game.
The Gauchos will go away for their game next Friday, Oct. 13th at San Jose State.
