SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara redshirt senior forward Drew Edelman has been selected to represent the United States in the 2017 Maccabi Games in Israel.

The Sunnyvale, Calif. native opens preliminary play with the USA on Sunday, Jul. 9, at 7:15 a.m. PDT (5:15 p.m. local time) against Russia. Edelman is also set to face Israel (Monday, Jul. 10 at 9:30 a.m. PDT) and Australia (Wednesday, Jul. 12 at 9:30 a.m. PDT) in the prelims before the semifinal and championship rounds next weekend.

Edelman landed in Israel several days ago, and has spent the days leading up to the tournament sightseeing with her teammates, heading to places such as the Dead Sea and the Wailing Wall.

The Maccabiah is the world's largest Jewish athletic competition in the tradition and values of Maccabi, emphasizing the centrality of the State of Israel in the life of the Jewish people. The Maccabiah takes place every four (4) years in Israel - "the Jewish Olympics" as they are often called, are Maccabi World Union's largest and most famous enterprise.

Edelman is coming off a standout season, her first on the court for UCSB. The USC transfer, who redshirted in 2015-16, led the Gauchos in both scoring (11.7 points per game) and rebounding (7.7 per game). Edelman was rewarded for her strong campaign with Second Team All-Big West and All-Big West Tournament honors.

With her holding down the frontcourt, UCSB earned a No. 4 seed in the Big West Tournament and came within inches of a league title, storming back from a 19-point deficit in an eventual 56-55 heartbreaking loss in the championship game to Long Beach State.
