EUGENE, Ore.– UC Santa Barbara Women's Tennis team fell to Oregon by a score of 2-5.
"Tough match for us today," said the head coach Simon Thibodeau. "We need to compete better at every position. Credit to Oregon who really played inspired on their home courts."
UCSB's losses have come against national powers like No.5 Texas Tech, No.9 UCLA, No. 21 South Carolina, and No.26 USC.
Oregon led the doubles as Marlous Kluiving and Julis Eshet defeated the duo of Stephanie Yamada and Melissa Baker by a score of 4-5. Nia Rose and Daniella Nasser took the next win against Natalie Da Silveira and Jaimee Gilbertson 6-3. The doubles tandem of Palina Dubavets and Stefani Stojic did not have a change to finish their match at No.1
Nationally ranked Dubavets played No.1 singles for UCSB and recorded a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2) win over Rose. Dubavets was one of the two Gauchos that were able to achieve a singles win. Another was Gilbertson, reigning Big West Player of the Week who played neck and neck match against Oregon's Julia Eshet at No. 3 and finished with a 7-5, 1-6, 10-4.
The Gauchos had a tough competition against the Ducks as No.2 Shweta Sangwan took down UCSB's Da Silveira 6-2, 6-3. Next off, Stojic fell to Alyssa Tobita at No.4 6-1, 6-3. Oregon continued its victory as Amanda Atanasson fell to Marlou Kluiving at No.5 6-1, 6-0. At No.6 Yamada attempted to fight off Nasser for the win but was defeated by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Gauchos will travel to Seattle for their match against University of Washington on Feb. 25 at 12:00 p.m.
