SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- In the first home match of the season, The UC Santa Barbara Women's Tennis team notched a 5-2 win over University of Nevada to hand the Wolfpack their first loss of the season.
UCSB improved to 2-1 on the season with authority over Nevada who falls to 5-1 in dual matches following the road loss.
"Nevada came with confidence because they were undefeated," said Head Coach Simon Thibodeau post-match. "We started off a bit nervously, but as the match progressed we imposed our game and solidfied a great win against a solid opponent."
The Gauchos opened up on the attack with dominant doubles performances all around. Junior Amit Lev Ari and freshman Tiffany Lagarde connected for a 6-3 win against Nevada's sophomore Maria Tatarnikova and freshman Selina Turulja to take an early lead from court three.
Following suit, freshman Anastasia Goncharova and junior Juliana Valero collected a 6-3 victory on court two against senior Adriana Gergelyova and freshman Roos vanReek to clinch the doubles point for UCSB.
From court one, senior Stephanie Yamada and sophomore Elizaveta Volodko opened up with a 5-3 lead over senior Marta Ruedas and sophomore Anastaysha Gorbacheva, but the match went unfinished following Gaucho wins from the former two pairs.
"We felt good about our doubles after sweeping Florida and Mississippi State during opening weekend," said Thibodeau. "We feel even more comfortable playing at home and the early wins gave us momentum heading into singles."
Amit Lev Ari kept it rolling with an assertive 6-1, 6-2 win over regional No. 73 sophomore Melissa Huchet on court three during singles play.
On court two, Nevada's Adriana Gergelyova pulled out a hard fought victory over No. 123 Elizaveta Volodko with a 6-2, 6-4 result.
Sophomore Lise Sentenac pulled ahead with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Maria Tatarnikova as the Gauchos took a commanding 3-1 lead.
For the clincher, Tiffany Lagarde completed a two-set sweep over sophomore Lili Fekete on court one with a 6-1, 7-5 win to secure a victory for UC Santa Barbara.
"It's always a big challenge to play No. 1 and I think she was very poised in her first match at home as a Gaucho," added Coach Thibodeau.
While Anastasia Goncharova dropped a tight three-set match 6-3, 4-6, 6-7 (8) to Roos vanReek on court four, Stephanie Yamada finished strong with a comeback win 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (8) to beat Selina Turulja for the final result of the day.
