In the late 1980s and early 90s UCSB student section became famous for bringing an electric atmosphere to the Thunderdome during several ESPN nationally televised victories over then number one-ranked UNLV. The (Gaucho) Locos were formed in 1998 as a support group for men's basketball program and quickly became famous for being one of the most intimidating and powerful student cheering sections in all of college basketball. Today their reputation continues at basketball and is nationally recognized for record-setting attendance and energy at soccer.

The Locos is a name used for gold clad students who energize Gaucho games and the group remains an independently run organization. Today the athletics department supports the program by offering a free season-themed tee shirt and giveaways as part of the “Unleash the Loco” marketing program to ensure strong student attendance at soccer and basketball as well as enhanced school pride.
