COTO de CAZA, Calif. - Playing in its first winter/spring tournament of the 2020 season, the UC Santa Barbara golf team finished in a fourth-place tie at 36-over par at the Orange County Collegiate Classic played on the Coto de Caza South Course on Tuesday.
UCSB, which started the day in sixth-place, jumped into a fourth-place tie with Santa Clara and UC Irvine by shooting its best round of the tournament, a 296, to finish with its 36-over, 900.
The Gauchos were paced by Brett Bennett who carded an even-par 72 in the third and final round fo finish at 6-over par, tying for ninth place. Brandon Bueno and Andrew Ricci each shot 10-over par to tie for 25th, while Matt Moomjian tied for 33rd at +12 and Brandon Jacobs tied for 41st at 14-over par.
Cal State Fullerton and San Francisco tied for the team title at the tournament with each squad recording a 12-over par 876. The co-champions finished 19 shots ahead of Grand Canyon (895) and 24 ahead of UCSB, UC Irvine and Santa Clara. Cal Baptist (905), Loyola Marymount (908), Butler (913), UC San Diego (918) and Central Arkansas (918) rounded out the top-10.
The individual title was won by Fullerton's Derek Castillo who shot an 8-under par 208, seven shots better than teammate Jack Dyer (-1), the only other player under par. USF's Tim Widing (even par) and Alex Chin (+1) finished third and fourth respectively.
The Gauchos return to action on Feb. 21-23 when they travel to the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
