MALIBU - Calif. - Senior captain Morgan Mays and junior transfer Simon Freund (LSU) advanced to the ITA Southwest Regional Championships semifinal with an exciting 8-6 win over UCLA Bruins Martin Redlicki and Max Cressy Saturday in Malibu.
The Gaucho pair, in their first tournament together, played like veterans, holding serve throughout the match and breaking the big serving lefty Redlicki at love for the victory.
On Sunday, Mays and Freund will face the tournament's second seeded team and number one pair from Cal Poly, Cory Pang and Ben Donovan at 10:00 am. The Mustang duo is nationally ranked and won the prestigious Battle of the Bay tournament in San Francisco two weekends ago. The contest has major ramifications as the winners of the Regional Championships earn an invitation to the National Indoor Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in November.
Singles did not go as well for the Gauchos as Mays and Nicolas Moreno de Alboran were each swept away in straight sets in Round of 16 action. Second seeded Bruin Gage Brymer was simply too good, dispatching Mays 6-2, 6-2. Moreno went down in a disappointing 6-1, 6-3 match to Petr Iamachkine of Pepperdine.
