NEW YORK - The UC Santa Barbara doubles team of Morgan Mays and Simon Freund finally had their impressive run ended on Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
Mays and Freund, whose two victories on Thursday to propel them into the quarterfinals included a win over Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe of Oklahoma State, the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the country, fell on Friday to the brother tandem of Richard and Victor Pham of Columbia, 7-5, 6-4.
Richard and his regular doubles partner Shawn Hadavi, are ranked No. 7 nationally while Victor and his partner Michal Rolski are ranked No. 48.
Mays and Freund became the first UCSB team to qualify for the prestigious USTA/ITA Indoor Championshps by winning five matches and the title at the ITA Southwest Regional Championship in October. Before the loss to Pham and Pham, they had won their first seven matches since being paired together.
Gaucho players will play their final fall tournament when they travel to the Jack Kramer Club Invitational in Los Angeles on Nov. 10-13.
