SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The defending Big West Conference champion UC Santa Barbara will open the 2017 dual season with a pair of matches in Hawai'i this weekend.
The Gauchos will open the year on Saturday, Jan. 14 with a 2:00 p.m. (PST) match agaisnt the host Rainbow Warriors and then, on Sunday, they will take on a tough San Diego State team. The contest against UH will also be the first Big West Conference match.
UCSB will be led in singles by senior Morgan Mays, who is ranked 96th in the ITA rankings, and the doubles tandem of Mays and Simon Freund, which is ranked 19th and won the 2016 ITA Southwest Regional championship. Freund also teamed with Nicolas Moreno De Alboran to win the doubles title at the Jack Kramer Invitational.
"Morgan and Simon are the number one team in the Soiuthwest Region, which includes UCLA and USC," said head coach Marty Davis. "That's very impressive and they deserve the ranking."
The Gauchos will play their first seven matches away from home. They will play their home opener on Mar. 4 against Loyola Marymount.
