IRVINE, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara senior Morgan Mays (Malibu, Calif./Wake Forest) went undefeated in his opening matches of the 2017 season, garnering the initial Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week award.
"Morgan was spectacular over the weekend," said head coach Marty Davis. "Hopefully he'll win this award many times this season."
Mays went 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles with partner Simon Freund as the Gauchos knocked off San Diego State and Hawai'i by identical 7-0 scores in Honolulu.
Mays defeated Aztec counterpart Marko Goles-Babic, 6-3, 7-6, at No. 2 singles. He then moved up to No. 1 singles against Rainbow Warrior Felix Albert and won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 1 doubles, Mays and Freund teamed up to topple Albert and Ruben Blattner of UH by a 6-0 margin. The UCSB duo is ranked 19th in the nation.
Weather-permitting, the Gauchos will travel to No. 7 UCLA on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. match at the Los Angeles Tennis Club.
