Senior Co-Captain Joseph Guillin Awarded 8th Seed at Oracle/ITA Masters Tournament

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara's Joseph Guillin (ranked 28th in the nation) was awarded the 8th seed in the prestigious Oracle ITA Masters Tournament, the organization announced Wednesday. The 2018 Big West First Team honoree follows in the footsteps of recent UCSB standouts Nicolas Moreno de Alboran and Simon Freund, who earned bids to the Masters tournament in 2018 and 2017 respectively.

The UCSB co-captain finshed his tournament run on Friday evening with a 2-1 record, his defeat coming at the hands of first-seeded Keegan Smith (UCLA).

Guillin's first match was on Thursday against Amadeo Blasco of Longwood University at host Pepperdine University. The UCSB co-captain dropped the first three games, but switched up tactics brilliantly to win the next 12 of 14 games against the Big South conference player of the year, 6-3, 6-2. Guillin had the evening off following the victory, and faced off against ninth-seeded Aditya Vashistha from St. Johns University on Friday in the round of 16.

Guillin dominated his opponent from the start, never losing serve en route to a 6-4, 6-3 victory. After sliding past Vashistha in the round of 16, Guillin's next match was against Smith on Friday evening.  Smith and Guillin battled but the Bruin came out on top in straight set wins, 6-3, 6-4.

Head coach Marty Davis and Guillin look ahead to the All-American Championships in Tulsa, OK. Guillin went 12-5 in tournament play in 2018, cementing his status as an elite contender this year. Advancing to the quarterfinals at the Oracle Masters will reinforce the notion that Guillin is in for another stellar season.

ESPNU will re-air the finals on Oct. 2 for the men's bracket at 1 p.m. (PST). The ESPN family of networks will broadcast the Oracle ITA Masters to a national audience for the second consecutive year.

The tournament features an elite NCAA Division I field comprised of the top players from each conference in the country. The Masters tournament is the first of four tournaments hosted by the ITA in the fall, the others being the ITA All-American Championships, ITA Cup and ITA National Fall Championships.

The Oracle ITA Masters continues Saturday with the finals scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 29 at the Malibu Racquet Club.
