Gauchos Lose 4-3 to UW

Gauchos Lose 4-3 to UW

SEATTLE, Wash. –

After winning an intense doubles point on Monday against the University of Washington, the UCSB men's tennis team lost four straight matches in singles to move to 0-2 on the road and the season.

"After how well we played overall in doubles, they became the more aggressive team in singles," said Head Coach Marty Davis. "I feel like we win about 90% after getting the doubles point, so it's disappointing."

A clutch performance from Victor Krustev and Joseph Rotheram formally went down as unfinished at 6-5 UW. The junior duo, playing in their second year together, held off consecutive match points against UW's number one pair of Jack Davis and Ewen Lumsden.

On court two, Gauchos Joseph Guillin and Alejandro Vedri beat Liam Puttergill and Adam Torocsik by a score of 6-4, while sophomores Luka Vukmanovic and Alex Soto played a thrilling match on court three, breaking the Huskies' serve at 6-5 to win 7-5.

The victory for Vukmanovic is officially his first as a Gaucho.

Guillin started strong in singles but lost the final three games in the first set at 3-6. He fell first for the Gauchos, and UW cruised to victory on courts four, three and five before Alex Vedri and Wilhelm Saiga added last-minute victories for UCSB.

"We really got pushed around in the indoor setting, just not as aggressive or assertive,"said Davis, who noted the Gauchos struggle at venues like the Nordstrom Tennis Center which feature indoor courts. He pointed to losses like at Drake and at Utah State, reflecting that those may have been the worst losses in those seasons.

"Washington is a tough team, they had some good guys injured…we have another road trip coming up and we have to be ready to play."

UCSB will hit the road again, travelling to the University of Santa Clara for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Tournament.
