Gauchos Suffer Narrow 4-3 Defeat to SCU; Set to Face UNC Wilmington on Sunday

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -

The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos are now slotted in the consolation round after falling to Santa Clara University 4-3 on Saturday at the 2020 ITA Kickoff Weekend at host USC. The next matchup is Sunday against the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington, a match in which the Gauchos will be looking to right the ship after a bumpy 0-3 start.

"I'm just disappointed with how we can't play both ends of a match well enough to come out with a win," said Head Coach Marty Davis following the first loss in the tournament. "We nearly win the doubles point and start strong in singles but again we failed to reach that higher level."

The doubles point came down to the match on court one, a back and forth affair that ended with a 7-6 (8-6) tiebreaker victory for Vasileios Iliopoulos and Arthur Neuhaus, the No. 52 ranked tandem in the nation. The duo of Joseph Rotheram and Victor Krustev continued their strong play but fell short in the matchup.

Joseph Guillin and Alex Vedri are 2-1 together so far in 2020, after securing the win on court two.  Alex Soto and Luka Vukmanovic lost 6-4, their second loss in three for the season.

The Gauchos evened-out things in singles when Guillin finshed his opponent 6-2, 6-2 and the match remained tense following Soto's loss by the same score on court five.

The two teams went back and forth at this point: Krustev won on court two 6-2, 7-5; SCU countered with wins on court four and the match clincher on six, this after Vedri set the stage for the winner-take-all with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory on court three. Wilhelm Saiga nearly played the hero role for the Gauchos, winning a 6-0 set before faltering after having match point in set two 7-6 (8-6) and finally losing 4-6 in set three.

UCSB will face off at 10 AM on Sunday against UNC Wilmington at host USC.
