SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— The No. 4 UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team won its fourth straight match Friday night at Robertson Gym, sweeping the visiting Mastodons of Purdue Fort Wayne 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-21).
Senior outside hitter Roy McFarland led the attack for the Gauchos posting 12 kills on a potent .474 attack percentage, and senior opposite Keenan Sanders followed with nine kills on .750 hitting. As a team, UCSB achieved its highest attack percentage of the season posting an astounding .514 line.
The Mastodons hung tight with the Gauchos for much of the first set, until the host team went on 13-6 run to close out the frame 25-16. UCSB would see a repeat performance in the second set, claiming it 25-16 as well, behind a late 7-1 run that was fueld by a pair of huge blocks by senior Randy DeWeese. DeWeese would finish with four block assists, which tied the match-high.
The third set saw the best effort of the night from Purdue Fort Wayne, but also saw the best attack for UCSB which posted a .571 attack percentage and 18 kills.
Despite this impressive line from the Gaucho offense and a hot 5-1 start to the period, the Mastodons battled back to tie it at 13-13. From there UCSB never forfeited the lead again closing out the set, and the match on a 12-8 run to remain perfect on the season.
Reigning Off the Block Setter of the Week, senior setter Casey McGarry, was back at it with his fourth straight 30+ assist match posting 32 with a .604 success rate. defensively, sophomore Haotian Xia paced the Gauchos with seven digs and added a block assist.
The Gauchos were also very impressive from the service line notching four aces and a .838 serving percentage. They would also show up big on the defensive end with a season high 9.5 total blocks.
UCSB will look to keep its 12 set alive tomorrow night when the team hosts Ball State. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Robertson Gym.
