WESTWOOD, Calif. - After taking an 11 day break the well rested No. 3 UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team blew past No. 8 UCLA Wednesday night, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-18.
The Gauchos (9-2 overall) limited the Bruins (7-6) to a season-low .169 percentage on the night and collected 40 of their 75 points on Bruin attack errors.
In the first set, UCSB jumped out to a 7-2 lead before UCLA rallied to take an 18-17 lead before the visitors scored three in a row to reclaim a 20-18 led. The teams traded points after that, resulting in the Gauchos' 25-23 win. The Bruins had 10 hitting errors and seven service errors in the set.
After UCLA jujped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second set, UCSB rallied to tie the score at 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. The sccore was still tied at 16 when Santa Barbara rattled off three straight points. The Bruins narrowed the gap to 23-22, but the Gauchos closed out the set by scoring the last two points.
UCLA once again opened the third set with a 3-0 lead and still led 5-4 when UCSB used a strong service game to run off the next six points. The Gauchos pushed the advantage to 19-10 before the Bruins closed the lead to 19-13, but Santa Barbara held strong for a 25-18 win that saw the home team hit just .083 as compared to UCSB's .318.
For the match, the Gauchos had a .267 to .169 advantage in hitting percentage. Randy DeWeese led the team with nine kills, two service aces and a pair of blocks. Keenan Sanders had six kills, three blocks and one assist, and Ryan Wilcox added six kills and service ace. Casey McGarry had 25 assists, while Grady Yould had 11 digs.
UCSB returns home on Friday, Feb. 21 to host Pepperdine in a 7:00 p.m. match at Robertson Gym.
