DeWeese Posts Career-High 20 Kills in Sweeping of USC

LOS ANGELES, Calif.— The No. 3 Gauchos (12-2) have matched their season opening win streak with their sixth straight win Saturday on the road at USC, thanks to another career performance from senior Randy DeWeese. UCSB took care of the host Trojans in three (27-25, 25-21, 27-25) to earn its fourth straight sweep as the team approaches the beginning of the conference season.

DeWeese was truly effective and efficient for the Gauchos posting a career-high 20 kills on just 33 swings for an attack percentage of .515. He rounded out the performance with a pair of solo blocks and four digs as well. Senior setter Casey McGarry led the way in both assists (38) and digs (7).

The offense was flowing for both teams with both the Gauchos and the Trojans hitting over .300 as a team in all three sets. UCSB was truly potent in the second set posting 16 kills, with zero errors, and an attack percentage of .696. The Gauchos would finish the match with a team mark of .456, which is its third best performance of the season.

The first set was the closest contest as it tool extra points for the Gauchos to claim it 27-25. The teams traded punches tallying 13 ties and three lead changes, but UCSB would come through at the end to take the 1-0 lead. The second frame was all Gauchos with the team taking an early lead and never surrendering it on their way to a 25-21 triumph.

With their backs against the wall the Trojans did what they needed and hung around until the final point of the the third set. They jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead that the Gauchos did not catch until both teams met at 20-20. From there, UCSB used its momentum to finally take a late lead and held on in extra points to take it 27-25.

No. 3 UCSB will now return home to host UCLA at Rob Gym Tuesday night. The team's final match before opening up Big West play.
