UC Santa Barbara Ends LA Road Trip Against UCLA

LOS ANGELES (Jan. 20, 2023) – The UC Santa Barbara Men's Volleyball team (1-6) were back in action as they took a business trip to Los Angeles. On this second day on the road, the Gauchos made it to Pauley Pavilion to take on the Bruins of UCLA. After three sets of play, it was the the Bruins who came out with the win as the Gauchos dropped this match in three (32-30, 25-17, 25-21).] 

HOW IT HAPPENED
From the start of the first set, everyone in attendance knew this would be a close battle between two Top 15 teams. Neither team was able to gain more than two points over their opponent, with the lead changing multiple times throughout the set. Both teams wanted the win so bad it went to extra points, resulting in a 32-30 loss for the Gauchos in the first set.

After losing such an intense battle in the first set, it was hard for the Gauchos to make a comeback. The Bruins were able to grab a lead in both sets, resulting in scores of 25-21 and 25-17. 

LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS

  • Ryan WIlcox is still the powerhouse for the Gauchos. He led the team in scoring, he finished tonight's game with 10 kills while adding on three aces.
  • Geste Bianchi and Dayne Chalmers were crucial in the Gauchos' success. Binachi finished with eight on the team while Chalmers added on six.
  • Max Gordon showed up big in the back row. He was the only person to finish in double-digit points.

The Gauchos will be on the road for one more weekend as they travel to Pepperdine for a match on Wednesday, Feb. 1.
