SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Sophomore driver Nathan Puentes of the UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team has been named the Golden Coast Conference Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Thursday morning.

The Los Altos, Calif.-native scored a hat trick in No. 4 UCSB's (17-5, 1-1 GCC) 11-10 win at No. 7 Long Beach State on Saturday and followed it up with a double hat trick on Sunday in a 13-10 overtime victory against No. 8 Cal as the Gauchos snapped their five-game losing streak in resounding fashion.

Puentes' most important goal of the weekend came in the first overtime period on Sunday, as he beat Cal goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg on a penalty shot to give the Gauchos the go-ahead goal.

He also recorded an assist and a steal in the Cal match, as Santa Barbara picked up its second win this season over the Golden Bears, doing so for the first time since 1981.

Puentes is the fourth UCSB player to earn the honor this season, joining sophomore goalkeeper Danny Roland, junior attacker Cole Brosnan, and redshirt sophomore attacker Leo Yuno.

Santa Barbara welcomes GCC opponent UC Irvine to Campus Pool for its home finale on Saturday, Nov. 2. Senior day proceedings will begin at approximately 11:47 a.m., while the match is scheduled to begin at noon.
