2017 Cross Country
Competed eight times for his freshman campaign. Clocked a 9:21.33 for the steeplechase at the All-UC Challenge, taking second in a new personal best. Achieved another personal best the week after at the Ben Brown Invitational, completing the 5000m in 14:42.86. Won the steeplechase at the Big West Challenge Cup, running a solo 9:26.51. Finished things up at the Big West Conference Championships, taking a sixth place finish in a time of 9:27.57.
2016 Cross Country
Competed in six meets for his debut cross season as a Gaucho. Opened up with a 25:32.9 8k at the Lagoon Meet for fourteenth place. Showed some grit at the UC Riverside Invitational by running 25:00.0 with one shoe, getting flat-tired about 800 meters into the race and losing the shoe completely after three miles. Set a personal best at the Stanford Invitational by running 24:25.2 for 32nd place. Scored for the first time at the Big West Conference Championships by finishing as the number five scorer and 17th overall, securing a second place team finish for the Gauchos.
Redshirt season. Ran 3:51.54 for 1500m at the Steve Scott Invitational unattached.
2015 Cross Country
Lay exploded onto the running scene as a senior for the Morro Bay Pirates. After placing sixth at the CIF State Cross Country meet, Lay carried the momentum onto the track, setting personal bests in the 3200m back-to-back weekends on his way to a CIF State appearance. At the CIF Masters, Lay finished in 9:02.01- the 14th fastest time in California on the year. At the SLO County Championships, Lay lowered his best in the 1600m to 4:19.29. Was coached by Peter Van Beurden.
