  • UCSB Hosts Hawai’i, Travels to Cal Poly for Regular Season Finale

    Last week, UCSB picked up its second win in three games with a 57-52 victory at UC Davis. The Gauchos’ defense limited the potent Aggie offense to just 35 percent shooting and also picked up 21 turnovers. Leading the team in scoring was Jasmine Ware with 14 points, while Kristine Brance was behind her with 10. The win evened the season series with Davis, as the Aggies took a 60-54 overtime win in the Thunderdome last month. Before Saturday’s win, UCSB opened the week with a 58-46 loss at UC Irvine. Ware was the only Gaucho to score in double-figures with 12 points in going 6-9 from the floor. As a team, UCSB struggled offensively and shot just 30 percent, while the Anteaters’ offense ran smoothly with its 44 percent shooting night.

  • Gauchos Travel to UC Irvine, UC Davis This Week

    Last week, UCSB captured its first win of the season with a 48-39 victory over Cal State Fullerton after falling to UC Riverside 71-65. The Gauchos’ defense stifled the Titans who only managed an 18.2 percent shooting percentage in the first half and 22 percent overall. Seniors Clair Watkins and Kristine Brance led UCSB with 10 and nine points, respectively, while Watkins also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Against the Highlanders, the Gauchos had four players score in double figures for just the second time this season. Despite the team’s offensive boom, it gave up too many fouls, as UCR went 19-25 at the foul line compared to the Gauchos who went 7-11.

    Last week, UCSB dropped its two games with Long Beach State (68-38) and Cal State Northridge (60-21). At the Walter Pyramid, the Gauchos could not muster enough offense to keep pace with the steal-happy 49ers. Long Beach State forced UCSB into 23 turnovers (11 steals), as it cashed them in for 27 points. Following their loss at Long Beach, the Gauchos returned home to host the Matadors. UCSB’s tenacious defense limited CSUN to just 10 points through the opening 12 minutes, as they were down by just two points. The Matadors, though, finished the first half on an 18-0 run, and easily took the 60-21 decision.

    Last week, UCSB flew out to Hawai’i and fell 60-43 to the Rainbow Wahine. Keeping true to their reputation as one of the best rebounding teams in the conference, Hawai’i outrebounded UCSB 40-25 en route to its victory. The Rainbow Wahine also created offense from its defense, as they scored 22 points off 16 Gaucho turnovers. Onome Jemerigbe led UCSB with 13 points and was the only Gaucho to reach double figures in scoring. Taylor Farris came off the bench to lead UCSB in rebounding with a career-high of eight. The frehsman also set a personal record with two blocks.

    Last week, UCSB fell in tight battles to UC Irvine and UC Davis. Against the Anteaters, the Gauchos came up short in a 61-58 decision where they mainly played from behind, but never fell behind by more than ten points. UCI held that 10-point advantage with 7:45 left in the game, but UCSB would cut the deficit down to three points on two occassions. The Gauchos played the Aggies into overtime, but were outscored 12-6 in the extra period as they dropped the game 60-54. Onome Jemerigbe hit a three from the top of the arc in the waning seconds of regulation to force overtime, but the Aggies made seven free throws to close out the road win.
