MORAGA, Calif. – A hot start vaulted the UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team into a competitive matchup against St. Mary's, but the Gauchos ultimately fell 64-43 at McKeon Pavilion on Friday night.
A back-and-forth first quarter saw Santa Barbara (1-1) come from behind to take the lead after the media timeout, with junior point guard Danae Miller's jumper at the 3:42 mark putting the Gauchos up 11-9.
The battle between the two squads continued and redshirt senior guard Coco Miller added a triple to UCSB's tally, but two St. Mary's (1-1) trips to the free throw line resulted in the home team taking the 15-14 lead at the end of the opening frame.
To open the second quarter, the combination of Danae Miller's and-one and senior guard Tal Sahar's jumper gave the Gauchos their biggest lead of the game up to that point, putting Santa Barbara up 19-15.
St. Mary's came back to tie the game up at 22-all as both teams kept pace with each other, until St. Mary's began to pull away after the media timeout at 4:32.
The Gaels built upon a 31-27 halftime lead with a 24-12 third quarter, connecting on four of six attempts from outside the arc, led by Taycee Wedin's trio of treys.
"We come out of the locker room and give up a layup and uncontested three, so it's something we've got to work on. We can't do that on the road," said UCSB head coach Bonnie Henrickson after the game.
UCSB had trouble connecting on shots in the third quarter, going just 6-for-21.
St. Mary's would protect the lead throughout the fourth quarter, ultimately closing the game out with a 64-43 scoreline.
The Gauchos return home next Friday, going a week without playing before taking on San Jose State at 7 PM in the Thunderdome.
