Women’s Basketball Announces Pair of NLI Signings

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team has added two National Letter of Intent (NLI) signees set to join the team in the 2020-21 season, head coach Bonnie Henrickson announced on Wednesday.

Guards Alyssa Marin, of Camarillo, Calif. and Camarillo High School, and Anya Choice, of Santa Rosa, Calif. and Cardinal Newman High School, will bring their sharpshooting and playmaking abilities to UCSB beginning next season.

"Our Gaucho family is thrilled to add Alyssa Marin and Anya Choice," said head coach Bonnie Henrickson.

Marin is a 5' 9" guard that averaged 18.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.3 steals per game in her junior season.

She holds the record for most three-pointers made in a single season at Camarillo High. In her junior season, Marin boosted her points per game production by six points after transitioning into the primary point guard role, and in doing so led her team to its eighth-straight league title. For her efforts, she was named Camarillo Girls Basketball Player of the Year, Ventura County Player of the Year, and Ventura County Star Player of the Year and earned a selection to the All-Division I First Team in the 2018-2019 season.

"Alyssa brings the ability to make plays off the dribble at the next level. She scores from the three-point line while also being able to get to the rim. Her court vision is impressive. She delivers a ball where most don't see an opening.  This skill set will be valuable for us in both our transition and half court offensive game," remarked the Gauchos' fifth-year head coach.

Choice is a 5' 8" combo guard that averaged 22.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.3 steals per game in her junior year.

She was the 2019 North Bay League MVP and San Francisco Chronicle North Bay Player of the Year while playing for Cardinal Newman. Choice earned All-State honors each of the past two seasons, and made the All-Metro team in both years as well.

"Anya brings a scorer's mentality to our perimeter game. Her ability to attack the basket and stretch the defense is exactly what we need.  We are looking to improve our perimeter defense on the ball and we believe Anya can bring that as well," added Henrickson.

The Gauchos return home on Friday to take on San Jose State at 7 PM in the Thunderdome.
