SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team dropped its third contest of the 2020-21 season in an 82-60 defeat to Santa Clara on Friday night at the Thunderdome.
Santa Clara's Ashlyn Herlihy led the Broncos (2-2) with 20 points, while UCSB (0-3) redshirt senior guard Doris Jones had a team-high 16 points on a night in which the Gauchos had just seven active players available to play with redshirt senior guard Natalia Bruening missing her first game of the season due to injury.
UCSB trailed throughout the majority of the game but kept it close in the first and second quarters, with redshirt junior guard Bri Anugwom and freshman guard Alyssa Marin combining for two threes and Jones converting on a pair of jumpers in the opening period.
Jones kept heating up in the second quarter, adding 10 points to her tally on 3-of-5 shooting from the field, including a pair of deep three-pointers, and a successful 2-for-2 trip to the charity stripe.
However, the Broncos, playing their fourth road contest of the season so far, led the Gauchos 34-26 going into the halftime break. Their depth proved too difficult to overcome in the second half, as they outscored the Gauchos 48-34 over the final two quarters en route to earning their second win of the year.
Santa Clara enjoyed an advantage on the offensive glass, outrebounding the Gauchos 19-7 while building up a +21 margin in total boards.
"They battled, they competed, and they weren't all playing in their best positions," UCSB head coach Bonnie Henrickson said of the seven student-athletes that played tonight. "We knew there would be glitches and confusion, and [there's] some stuff we can clean up for tomorrow. Our first shot defense was good, it's just the second and third shot opportunities [that we should look to improve on]."
It will be a quick turnaround for the Gauchos as they prepare to face Santa Clara once again tomorrow night at 5 p.m. in their final scheduled game before Big West Conference play begins.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 with Gerry Fall and Louis Reynaud on commentary. Live stats will be available on UCSBGauchos.com.
