FULLERTON, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team picked up its second win of 2021 as it swept its season series against Cal State Fullerton with a 79-60 victory on Saturday night at Titan Gym.
The Gauchos (2-6, 2-2 Big West Conference) went a near-perfect 11-of-13 from beyond the arc in the second and third quarters of the game and held the Titans (0-5, 0-2 Big West) to 22 first-half points as they improved to .500 in Big West play.
The two teams went back and forth in the first quarter, but a 14-13 lead for Fullerton after the opening 10 minutes turned into a 16-point deficit by halftime as the Gauchos found their form at the three-point line.
Junior guard Taylor Mole converted on three triples, senior point guard Danae Miller netted two three-pointers as part of her 10 points in the quarter, including a buzzer-beating bank shot at the end of the half, and freshman guard Anya Choice added another as the Gauchos went 6-for-6 from downtown in the second period as they led 38-22 at the half.
UCSB didn't slow down in the third quarter, growing its lead to 22 by the quarter's end on a 63-41 scoreline as six different student-athletes got on the scoresheet and freshman guard Alyssa Marin joined the aforementioned three with a triple of her own.
The Gauchos went on to lead by as much as 24 with 5:22 left in the fourth as they comfortably reached their second conference and overall win of the season.
"We were able to stretch and grow the led quite well. We had 19 assists on 29 field goals, and it was more of the same from last night: if we share the ball and move the ball, we will get rewarded for it," said head coach Bonnie Henrickson after the game.
Miller led the team with 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting, including 4-of-9 from three-point range.
"Danae got good looks and at one point she scored on two or three-straight possessions. It was good to see the success she was having tonight," added Henrickson.
Mole was the second-leading scorer with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including five triples. Redshirt senior Doris Jones had 17 points and Choice was the last of four Gauchos in double-digits with 11 to her name.
The Gauchos will be off for the week before heading down to take on UC San Diego at the RIMAC Arena on Friday, Jan. 15 and Saturday, Jan. 16. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN3 and live stats will be available on UCSBGauchos.com.
