Gauchos Travel North in One Match Week
UC Santa Barbara will continue Big West Conference play when it travels to UC Davis for a match on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 4:00 p.m. The Gauchos and Aggies have played 19 times over the years with UCSB holding a 12-6-1 record, including a 1-0 win in 2018.

The Record
UCSB enters its match at UC Davis with an overall record of 5-3-3 and a Big West mark of 1-0. The Gauchos opened league play on Oct. 6 with a 1-0 shutout win over defending league champion and favorite Long Beach State and since beginning the year with a record of 0-1-2, they have gone 5-2-1.

Freshman Scores in Second Straight Match
Freshman Dylan Lewis scored UCSB's only goal in its 1-0 win over visiting Long Beach State on Sunday. It was the Los Angeles-native's second goal of the season and, in fact, the second in as many matches. Lewis enters the week tied for third on the team with those two goals and she is third on the team with five points. Also, her 10 shots on goal are second only to Shaelan Murison.

Murison Continues Her Scoring Roll
In UCSB's last match, a 1-0 win over Long Beach State, senior Shaelan Murison assisted on the only goal of the match. She now has eight goals and four assists for 20 points on the year. She leads the Gauchos and the Big West in goals and she has scored at least one point every game in which UCSB has scored this season. Murison now has 25 goals and 13 assists for 63 points in her career. Her goal total is tied for 10th in school history and she needs two to move into a tie for eighth all-time. The 63 points ranks Murison in a tie for 11th all-time and she needs just one more point to move into a tie for 10th on the all-time list.

DeWeese Has Another Huge Effort
Senior goalkeeper Hanna DeWeese logged her fifth complete game shutout in the win over Long Beach State and, for the second time this season, she saved a penalty kick to save the day for the Gauchos. In the second half of the match, a Long Beach player was fouled in the box and was awarded the PK. Kaylee Ramirez took the kick and tried to put it to DeWeese's right, but the UCSB goalkeeper anticipated right and made the save. Her other save on a PK came in a 1-0 loss to No. 2 Stanford. She is the only goalkeeper that Santa Barbara has used this season. DeWeese has allowed 10 goals and has a 0.84 goals against average. In addition to her five shutouts, she has allowed one goal twice and two goals four times. Since she entered the Gauchos' match at Cal last season, the team's sixth of the year, she has been the starter and over that span, she has 10 shutouts, has allowed one goal eight times and two goals seven times. She has allowed more than two goals just once, a 3-2 loss at Weber State, and she has allowed two or fewer in 24 straight.

Defending Thier Honor
Hanna DeWeese needed just two saves to give UCSB its 1-0 win over Long Beach State, and one of those was on a penalty kick. The Gauchos defense was equally as responsible for the clean sheet against Long Beach. Sophomore left back Elise Ziem, sophomore center back Lauren Hess, senior center back Sophia Dertorossian, senior right back Katherine Sheehy and junior defensive midfielder Lauren Moss led a defensive effort that limited Long Beach to six overall shots and just two on goal. Also, if a match against No. 2 Stanford is subtracted from the occasion, the Gaucho defenders have held opponents to 90 overall shots in the 10 other contests, 9.0 per match. Also, Santa Barbara has a 17-10 goal advantage over its opponents, including a 15-6 edge in the last seven matches.

UCSB Fit to be Tied
In 2018, the UCSB women's soccer team didn't record a tie until the final regular season match at Cal Poly. In 2019, it didn't take the Gauchos as long to register their first tie. In fact, two games into the year, they had a pair of ties and now, 11 games in, they have three ties, two more than all of last season.

UCSB-Montana Match Cancelled
On Sept. 6 UCSB and the University of Montana battled through a scoreless first half in Missoula. At that point, lightning strikes caused a delay and, ultimately, the cancellation of the remainder of the match. It was the first time in program history that a Gaucho game was called because of weather.

The Stumpf File
Paul Stumpf is in his 21st season as UCSB's head coach. He currently possesses a school record 191 wins and an overall mark of 193-166-47. Stumpf is a two-time Big West Conference Coach of the Year (1999 and 2015), he has guided the program to two NCAA Tournaments, coached six Big West Offensive Players of the Year and three Big West Freshmen of the Year. Including his one season as an assistant coach at UCSB, he has been with the program for 22 seasons.
