Burling Scores First Collegiate Goal Against Colorado College

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (Aug. 18, 2022) – UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer kicked off the season with its first home game against the Colorado College Tigers for a non-conference match. All the scoring in this contest happened before the 18th minute, leaving the second half to be a physical and demanding game. By the end of 90 minutes, the Gauchos weren't able to come out with a win, losing 2-1 to Colorado College in their season opener.

The Tigers grabbed an early lead after sliding one past the Gauchos' defense, resulting in UC Santa Barbara playing from behind after five minutes of play. Down by two after 13 minutes, the Gauchos needed momentum, and they found it in Meg Burling. The sophomore forward snuck a ball past the Tigers' goalkeeper, putting UC Santa Barbara on the board and only down by one goal.

The score didn't change before the half, with the Gauchos heading to the locker room down 2-1. When both teams came back on the field, this fiery match continued with even more physical play. By the end of 90 minutes, the score did not change, resulting in a 2-1 loss for UC Santa Barbara.

  • Burling has the hot boot for the Gauchos to start the season, scoring her first collegiate goal in this contest. She also scored the team's only goal in its exhibition against Westmont.
  • Gauchos' goalkeeper Taylor Little finished the contest with two saves throughout the game, playing all 90 minutes in her second career start.
  • Emma Corcoran assisted on the lone goal of the evening. The freshman played 69 minutes in her first collegiate start.
  • Along with Burling, sophomore Lauren Helwig and senior Elise Ziem put pressure on the Tigers' defense, each putting up one shot on goal each.

The Gauchos will head to Moraga, California, as they take on Saint Mary's University for its first road contest of the regular season. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. with a live stream and stats available.
