Women's Soccer Wraps Up First Road Trip Against Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. (Aug. 21, 2022) – The UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team (0-2, 0-0 Big West) was back in action this afternoon. This time, the Gauchos played in their first road game of the 2022 season in Moraga, California, as they took on the Gaels of Saint Mary's College.

After a grueling 90 minutes of play under the midafternoon sun, the Gauchos couldn't pull out a win, losing 1-0 to the Gaels.

HOW IT HAPPENED

From the start of the match, both teams played a physical game. But it was Saint Mary's who used its physical demeanor to find the back of the net early on. The only goal in today's game came in the sixth minute as the ball slid by the Gauchos' defense during an untraditional play.

However, this didn't keep UC Santa Barbara from fighting back. The Gauchos put their hearts on the field and drew two yellow cards from the Gaels. Santa Barbara even made a big effort in the last two minutes of the game, controlling the ball in its offensive zone until the very last second. But even with this last-minute push, it wasn't enough to secure the win as the Gauchos lost 1-0 to the Gaels.

LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS

  • Despite the result of the game, the Gauchos played a relatively-equal game against the Gaels. Both teams put up seven shots each while UCSB had more saves with three compared to Saint Mary's two while also having more corner kicks with five.
  • Jessica Tamayo and Claire Grouwinkel put the most pressure on the Gaels' defense as they each put up two shots. One of Grouwinkel's shots were on goal.
  • In her first game of the season for the Gauchos, Evann Smith contributed three saves during her 90 minutes in the net.
