Helwig Grabs First Goal Of The Season Against Hornets

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Aug. 25, 2022) – UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer (0-2-1) was back in action today as they took on the Sacramento State University Hornets. This hard-fought battle was in UCSB's hands for most of the game, but in the end, neither team could register a game-winning goal, resulting in a 1-1 tie between the Gauchos and the Hornets.

HOW IT HAPPENED

UC Santa Barbara started the game hot. Unlike what happened in their first two contests, the Gauchos were the first to strike. A goal from Lauren Helwig off passes from Katie Killer and Courtney Andruczk put the Gauchos up by one in the sixth minute.

However, the Hornets had their own chance to attack. After a foul was called in the box on the Gauchos' goalkeeper, Sacramento State had a chance to score on a penalty kick. They successfully executed the attempt, putting the score at 1-1 to end the first half.

The last 45 minutes of play proved to be a physical game for both teams with a combined 13 fouls in this half alone, resulting in multiple stoppages and changes in possession. With the constant shift in momentum, the Gauchos were not able to rally together another goal, resulting in a 1-1 draw to finish this game.

LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS

  • As mentioned above, Helwig scored the team's only goal of the game, which is also her first of the season. This is the sophomore's third goal of her career.
  • The two assists that came from Helwig's goal were both freshmen. Both Killer and Andruczk registered their first career point off that play.
  • The Gauchos dominated the stats sheet. They outshot the Hornets 17 to five while also adding on six corners compared to Sacramento State, who had none throughout the game.
  • Sabrina Hinz saw her first minutes of the season, playing the second half of the game for the Gauchos. She did not allow any goals and had one save.
