SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (Sept. 18, 2022) – UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer is back in action at Harder Stadium as the Gauchos took on the University of Pacific Tigers. With the AYSO clubs in the stands on this beautiful Sunday afternoon, the Gauchos were able to come back from a deficit to tie the game, ending this match 1-1 with the Tigers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams came out fighting from the moment they stepped on the pitch. The aggressive style of play happened on both sides of the field and was reflected in the number of fouls, with the Tigers accumulating eight and the Gauchos nine. But it was Pacific who scored first in the 24th minute, slipping a ball past the Gauchos' defense to be the first on the board.
Throughout the season, UC Santa Barbara has not been able to come back once another team scored. However, they changed that narrative today. Meg Burling slipped a ball past the Tigers' defense off a pass from Krysten Vasquez to put the Gauchos on the board in the 52nd minute. This equalizing goal kept UCSB in the game, helping the team earn its third tie of the season.
LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS
- As mentioned above, Burling scored the team's only goal of the game. With this goal, she now leads the team in this stat category with three, and points with six.
- This was Vasquez's first appearance in Harder this season. In this appearance, the sophomore was also able to tab other firsts of the season with her first assist and point of the year.
- The Gauchos played a very dominant game over the Tigers. UCSB finished with three corners and nine shots compared to Pacific's one corner and four shots. When it came to possession, however, the Tigers had the ball 54 percent of the time compared to the Gauchos' 46 percent possession.
The Gauchos will be back here in Santa Barbara as the team hosts its first Big West game at Harder Stadium this season against the University of Hawai'i. This matchup between the Gauchos and Rainbow Wahine will begin at 7 p.m. with live stats and a live stream through ESPN+.
