ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The UC Santa Barbara softball team hit its first two home runs of the season, but was defeated in its two matchups on the second day of the 2020 Susan Craig Classic, dropping an extra-inning affair to Northern Colorado and falling to hosts New Mexico on Saturday afternoon at Lobo Softball Field.
Northern Colorado 5, UCSB 4 (8 innings)
The Gauchos let a 4-0 lead slip as Northern Colorado rallied to win 5-4 in extra innings in the first game of the second day of the tournament.
UCSB tacked on three more runs in the third, as Altmeyer collected another RBI single and senior OP Devan Sperry blasted a two-run homer, the Gauchos' first of the season.
Northern Colorado left it late as they came back to tie the game in the sixth and seventh innings, and won the game 5-4 on an RBI single from second baseman Natalie Joyner in the eighth.
New Mexico 9, UCSB 1 (5 innings)
UCSB fell to New Mexico in five innings in its second game of the day, despite a second-inning home run from Altmeyer.
The Lobos started the game on the front foot with a three-run first inning. Shortstop Cameryn O'Grady's RBI double established the early lead, a run was walked in with bases loaded to double the advantage, and an RBI sac fly from catcher Leslie Romero gave the Lobos a 3-0 edge.
Altmeyer pulled a run back for the Gauchos after connecting for a solo blast in the Gauchos' first at-bat of the second inning, cutting the Lobo lead to 3-1.
However, the Lobos put together a five-run fourth inning and walked off the game in the fifth via the run-rule.
With the losses, the Gauchos drop to 2-6 on the season.
The Gauchos finish up their five-game set at the 2020 Susan Craig Classic tomorrow with another pair of matchups against Northern Colorado and New Mexico. The game against the Bears begins at 9 a.m., whereas the Lobos tilt begins at approximately 11:30 a.m. Live stats for both are available on UCSBGauchos.com, and a live stream is available for the UCSB-New Mexico game.
