SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – In a rain-shortened affair on Tuesday morning at Campus Diamond, the UC Santa Barbara softball team fell to Notre Dame in six innings, 2-0.
In the top of the second inning, Notre Dame put two runners on with one out after an error and a bunt single allowed Sarah Genz and Alexis Holloway to reach base.
In the following at-bat, Leea Hanks singled through the right side to score Genz and put the visitors up 1-0.
As the game progressed into the third inning, Notre Dame's Quinn Biggio sent a home run over the fence in left center to double the Fighting Irish's lead.
The matchup was called by the umpires after UCSB starting pitcher Felisha Noriega struck out Biggio in the first action of top of the sixth.
The Gauchos faced one of the best pitchers in the ACC in Notre Dame's Alexis Holloway, who held a 1.16 ERA in 78.2 innings entering today's game, while holding opposing batters to a .197 average.
Noriega allowed five hits, walked a batter, and struck out five in 5.1 innings.
The Gauchos head back on the road this weekend at the LMU/CSUN tournament in Los Angeles and Northridge. UCSB's first game of the weekend takes place on Thursday at Loyola Marymount at 12:15 p.m. Live stats for all games will be available on UCSBGauchos.com.
