FRESNO, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara softball team closed out its weekend at the Kickoff Classic with a 10-5 loss to Fresno State on Sunday afternoon at Margie Wright Diamond.
Fresno State (3-5) went ahead 1-0 in the first inning and added eight runs in the third, including a three-run home run by Kelcey Carrasco.
The rally continued the following inning, when sophomore catcher Teah Thies hit a leadoff triple to set up freshman Sam Denehy, pinch-hitting in place of freshman second baseman Nayah Pola, for an RBI single in the next at-bat. Then, sophomore centerfielder Tyler Goldstein scored Denehy on a double to left field. Following a pitching change, Goldstein scored on an error by Fresno State's catcher to cut the Fresno lead to 9-4.
However, the Bulldogs made it 10 runs on the board with a two-out Julianna Martinez RBI double in the bottom half of the frame.
In the top of the sixth, sophomore right fielder Ally Nodohara scored what would be the game's final run after rounding the bases by singling, stealing second, heading to third on a passed ball, and scoring on a wild pitch.
The Gauchos head to San Diego in their second week of the season, facing the Toreros in a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 2 p.m. The two teams will play a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
