SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara softball team fell to 0-5 on the season following a pair of losses to San Diego at the USD Softball Complex on Friday evening.
Game one: San Diego 5, UCSB 0
The Gauchos were shut out in the first game of the day against a tough Madison Earnshaw in the circle, who went the distance in a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out five.
San Diego had only managed to put a single run on the board until the sixth inning, when Amanda Limon, who had batted in that run in the top of the third on a single, was bunted home by Hayley Hensley.
AJ Kaiser added a three-run homer later in the inning to put the Toreros up 5-0.
Game two: San Diego 4, UCSB 3
UCSB outhit San Diego 8-5 in the nightcap, but the Toreros broke the 3-3 deadlock with an RBI single by Rion Simms in the fourth inning and didn't look back to earn the series victory.
San Diego answered back with a three-run bottom half of the second inning, thanks to Clareese Santiago's RBI single and a later sequence in which Santiago and Alexia Torculas came across the plate on a Gaucho error.
UCSB wasn't down for long, though, as McNally and freshman designated player Sam Denehy singled in runs to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the third.
San Diego would score the eventual winning run in the bottom of the fourth when Rion Simms singled to right field and brought in Torculas to go ahead 4-3.
McNally had herself a 2-for-4 day at the plate with an RBI and freshman third baseman Korie Thomas had a hit in each of her three at-bats for UCSB.
The Gauchos conclude their series with the Toreros on Saturday. The start time for the final game of the weekend has been moved up to 12 p.m. from its original 1 p.m. first pitch time. Live stats will be available on UCSBGauchos.com.
