SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Emily Schuttish pitched her 11th complete game of the season to give the UC Santa Barbara softball team its second series sweep of the 2021 campaign in her farewell to Campus Diamond, as the Gauchos defeated UC Riverside 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Gauchos improve to 13-30 on the season and 10-11 in Big West play.
Things got tense in the top of the sixth inning, when Riverside's Gianna Araki hit a home run over the fence in right center before the Highlanders put runners on second and third on a Gaucho error and a double with one out. Schuttish rallied to strike out Maiah Motta swinging before Kennedi Sorensen was intentionally walked to load the bases. The Napa, Calif. native forced Leah Brito to fly out in the next at-bat to get the Gauchos out of the situation unscathed.
In the bottom half of the inning, junior left fielder Sammy Fabian added an insurance run with an RBI single that scored freshman Lauren Lewis, who pinch-ran for freshman third baseman Ashley Donaldson on the basepath after Donaldson reached on an infield single.
Schuttish, who finished with six strikeouts, five hits allowed, and two walks issued in seven innings, was honored in a Senior Day ceremony prior to the game. The fourth-year standout made her 49th career start and 88th appearance in the blue and gold in the victory.
The Gauchos have won five of their last six and look to carry over the momentum into next weekend as they complete their season at CSUN, beginning on Friday, May 14. Game information is available on the softball schedule page at UCSBGauchos.com.
