Gauchos Split Saturday Doubleheader at CSUN, Set Up Rubber Match in Season Finale Saturday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara softball team was defeated 4-3 in its opening contest of its final series in the Big West regular season at CSUN's Matador Softball Field on Friday, but it took the second game 5-1 to leave a rubber match on the cards for Saturday afternoon's season finale.

Game one: CSUN 4, UCSB 3

The Gauchos built up a 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two in the sixth, but CSUN left it late to snatch the game away from the Gauchos, scoring four runs in a nail-biting conclusion to the first game of the series.

UCSB found success early, scoring on an RBI single by junior first baseman Rayna Cohen that scored junior left fielder Sammy Fabian.

It took until the sixth for the Gauchos to score again, when sophomore right fielder Ally Nodohara singled in Lauren Lewis on a base hit to left center.

CSUN rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning, loading the bases on a Gaucho fielding error, a walk, and a hit batter, before putting four runs on the board with a Paloma Usquiano RBI single, a two-RBI double from Aaliyah Swan, and the game-winning RBI single from Journey Rojas.

Game two: UCSB 5, CSUN 1

UCSB took care of business in the second game with runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings.

In the third, Cohen smashed a double into right field for two runs, scoring junior second baseman Maci Fines and freshman shortstop Madelyn McNally.

One inning later, sophomore centerfielder Tyler Goldstein hit a sac fly to left field, bringing Nodohara across the plate to give the Gauchos a 3-0 lead.

The Gauchos picked up the final two runs in the sixth when a throwing error allowed Fabian to reach first while freshman baserunners Korie Thomas and Ashley Donaldson came home to go ahead by five.

CSUN pulled a run back on an RBI single by Rojas in the bottom of the seventh to prevent the shutout, but the Gauchos were able to wrap the game up.

The Gauchos complete their regular season tomorrow afternoon in Northridge, with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. Due to scheduling conflicts, the game will not be streamed on BigWest.TV, but an audio stream will be available via the CSUN Matador Sports Network.
