Shorthanded Gauchos Win Big West Opener in Davis

Shorthanded Gauchos Win Big West Opener in Davis

DAVIS, Calif. (Jan. 20, 2023) — Only five Gauchos traveled north for UC Santa Barbara's first women's tennis dual match of 2023, but they were enough to down the UC Davis Aggies, 5-2. UCSB is now 1-0 on the young season and atop The Big West, as the Gauchos begin their pursuit of a third consecutive conference championship.

Final: UC Santa Barbara 5, UC Davis 2
Records: UC Santa Barbara 1-0 (1-0 Big West), UC Davis 0-4 (0-1 Big West)

With only five players available, UCSB could only field two doubles partnerships, giving Davis an automatic win on court three. Unfazed, Amelia Honer and Kira Reuter took a big win on court one, 6-1, before Marta Gonzalez-Ballbe and Camille Kiss won a close contest on court two, 7-6, to claim the doubles point for the Gauchos.

After the Aggies got yet another automatic win on court six to start singles, Valentina Khrebtova earned her first win as a Gaucho on court number five to restore Santa Barbara's lead. Camille Kiss built that lead with her win on court two, but Davis took another win on court four to make the score 3-2. Thanks to Reuter and Honer, the Gauchos earned wins on the final two courts to take the match. Reuter provided the clinching victory on court number three, making Honer's win on the top court the icing on UCSB's cake.
