  • Nwaba Finishes 12th in First Olympic Effort

    UC Santa Barbara's Barbara Nwaba experienced her first Olympic Heptathlon and, in the end, finished in 12th-place.

    Former UC Santa Barbara star Barbara Nwaba will begin two days of Heptathlon competition at the Rio Olympics on Friday. The event will include four events on Friday and three on Saturday.
  • Gaucho Assistant Coach Selected to Head German Heptathlon Squad

    UCSB assistant track and field coach Annett Fleming has been named the Head Coach for the German 2016 Thorpe Cup team. Fleming will lead a young squad of German heptathletes against a veteran US squad in the annual US vs. German dual meet which will be hosted in Fayetteville by the University of Arkansas. The competition will be Friday-Saturday, July 29-30. The heptathlon portion of the meet will take each squads three best athletes and combine their total scores.
  • Former Gaucho Nwaba Qualifies for Rio after Winning Olympic Trials Heptathlon

    Barbara Nwaba, a former UCSB All-American won the 2016 Olympic Trials in the heptathlon at Oregon's Hayward Field on Sunday afternoon, qualifying her for the Rio Olympics. Nwaba's final score of 6494 was 71 points ahead of the nearest competitor. Nwaba graduated from UCSB in 2012 and holds the Big West record in the heptathlon, a mark she set to earn NCAA runner-up honors.
  • Pair of Gaucho Freshman Multis to Compete at USATF Junior Nationals

    Two UCSB freshman have qualified and are set to compete at the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships in Clovis, CA this Friday through Sunday at Buchanan High School. Hope Bender, a first year Gaucho from Newport Harbor goes into the meet ranked third in the nation on the heptathlon junior list. Wyatt Thompson-Siporen, a freshman from Ashland, Ore. ranks fourth nationally in the decathlon on the junior list. The JR lists include all athletes in the US who are under the age of 20 in 2016.
  • Emde Places 21st at NCAA Championships

    UCSB senior Jessica Emde placed 21st at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday in Eugene, Ore. Emde cleared her opening height of 5'8 before passing the next bar (5'10) and attempting 5'11.25. She had the chance to jump for fifth and sixth places on her close second and third attempts.
  • Pushing Her Limits; A Story of Incremental Gains for UCSB Senior

    After winning 23 career collegiate meets in the high jump, back-to-back Big West titles and earning three trips to the NCAA First Round, UCSB senior Jessica Emde will conclude her outstanding UCSB run at Oregon's Histoic Hayward Field this Saturday at 3pm. She will graduate this Sunday with double majors in Psychology and Sociology.
  • Emde Leaps Her Way Into the NCAA Final

    While the 2016 NCAA West Regional might make it's way into the record books for most weather delays and schedule changes in meet history, UCSB senior Jessica Emde was money in the bank, clearing her first three heights on first attempts, placing eighth out of 48 jumpers and qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
  • Twelve Gauchos Qualify for NCAA First Round in Kansas

    Twelves UCSB track and field athletes have qualified for the NCAA First Round competition which will be held at the University of Kansas, Thursday-Saturday, May 26-28. Six men and six women are set to compete in individual events in search of a top-twelve finish, earning a trip to the NCAA Final at the University of Oregon. Four UCSB school record holders will be making the trip for the Gauchos.

  • Five Gauchos Strike Gold; Men's and Women's Teams Finish Second at Big West Championships

    The UCSB men's and women's track and field teams each finished second at the Big West Track and Field Championships Saturday at Long Beach State. Both UCSB squads clawed their way through the final day of competition, the women coming from fourth to second in the final three events and the men moving up from fourth to second with six events to go, holding position until the end. Five UCSB athletes won Big West titles in individual events.
  • Gauchos Collect 4 Bronze Medals; 13 Advance to Finals on Day One of Big West Championships

    Four UCSB athletes received Bronze medals on the first day of the Big West Track and Field Championships at Long Beach State Friday. With the 3,000m Steelechase and 10,000m the only finals on the track, the day was filled with race prelims and field event finals. Thirteen UCSB athletes advanced out of the prelims into 16 finals positions Saturday.Melissa Rake (Javelin), Sara Bass (10,000m), Maxine Goyette (3,000m Steeplechase) and George Baier (3,000m Steeplechase) were the UCSB Friday medalists.
  • Track and Field to Compete at Big West Championships

    After eight months of preparation, the UCSB Gauchos will send their top men's and women's athletes to the Big West Championship in search of individual and team glory. Long Beach State will serve as the host for the eight men's and nine women's conference teams. The meet will take place on Friday and Saturday, with track prelims set to begin Friday afternoon.
  • Vaziri and Curry Deliver In Final Tune-Up Before Big West Championships

    While the UCSB combined event athletes were finishing up their second day of competition at the Big West multis, a small group of Gauchos traveled to Occidental College for one last meet opportunity before the main Big West Championship. Shyan Vaziri lowered his personal best in the 800m to 1:48.70, Parker Curry upped his best in the pole vault to 16'10.75.
  • Nelson Pulls out a Comeback For the Ages to Win Big West Decathlon Title; Bender Takes Heptathlon Bronze

    The UCSB combined events group got the men's and women's track and field teams off to a good start at the Big West Championships. Sophomore decathlete Tyler Nelson traded the lead five times with Long Beach State's Herman Day but in the end it was Nelson who prevailed, winning the conference crown with a heroic effort in the 1500m. All five Gaucho athletes broke into the scoring column, with four establishing new lifetime bests. Nelson's victory now makes it four Big West decathlon wins in five years for UCSB.
  • Decathletes and Heptathletes Ready for Big West Championships

    UCSB will send three decathletes and two heptathletes into action this weekend to the Big West Combined Events Championship. Hosting a two weekend block of championship competition, Long Beach State will welcome in nine Big West women's teams and eight on the men's side. The decathlon-heptathlon portion of the championship will take place on Friday-Saturday, May 6-7 while the regular meet will be the following weekend, May 13-14.

  • Gauchos Look to Hit Their Stride in Cal Poly Dual

    Shifting back to team competition after back to back weekends of relay and open event action, the UCSB track and field programs will return to team scoring with the annual Cal Poly Dual this Saturday hosted by Cal Poly in SLO. Last season the Gauchos split with the Mustangs, with the UCSB men taking the win and UCSB women falling short in the last events.
  • McDonald and Franklin Lead Gauchos at Triton Invite

    UCSB JR Myles McDonald placed second in the 400m hurdles and SO Jeremy Franklin earned a slot into the Invite final of the men's hammer, eventually placing seventh overall at the Triton Invite. The Gaucho pair led the way for a small contingent of athletes competing at UCSD while the bulk of the UCSB teams remained in Santa Barbara prepping for the Cal Poly Dual.

    While the bulk of the UCSB track and field squads are back in Santa Barbara, training to prepare for the Cal Poly Dual Meet (April 30th), a few select Gauchos will head south for the Triton Invite in search of season's best performances.
  • Track Teams Split for Trio of High Powered Meets

    The UCSB men's and women's track and field teams will split for the weekend in search of big individual performances. Gauchos will make appearances at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate (hosted by Long Beach State), the Mt. Sac Relays (hosted by Cerritos) and the Bryan Clay Invite (hosted by Azusa Pacific). In what has become the fastest regular season weekend in the collegiate season, Southern California will take center stage and the UCSB track teams will position their athletes to take advantage of the best winds and the best competition available.

  • UCSB Women Stay Undefeated with Challenge Cup Win; Men Place Second by .5 Point

    The UCSB women's track and field team used seven event victories to win the Challenge Cup over Long Beach State, 189.5 to 180.5. UCSB senior Melissa Rake set a new school record in the javelin with a throw of 160'1. Gaucho grad student Tori Tsolis pulled off the 800m-1500m double under the Cal State Fullerton lights, winning each race with a decisive closing sprint. The UCSB men locked into a close team battle with eventual winner, Long Beach, but fell in the end by less than a point, 176.5 to 176.
  • Gauchos to Compete Under the Fullerton Lights at the Big West Challenge Cup

    The UCSB men's and women's track and field squads will travel to CalState Fullerton Friday, April 8th to compete in the annual Big West Challenge Cup. Quickly becoming one of the highlight meets of the regular season, the Challenge Cup will held at Titan Track and will include Long Beach State, UC Irvine and host Cal State Fullerton. The competition will start with the hammer at 2:30 before the running events pick-up at 6pm and carry on under the stadium lights. The meet will feature live music and Dixon Farmer on the microphone, one of the most respected meet announcers in the sport.
  • Bender Earns Big West Field Athlete of The Week

    UCSB freshman heptathlete Hope Bender earned Big West Field Athlete of The Week honors for her performance at the Sam Adams Multi this past weekend. Competing against a field of elite and international athletes, Bender used strong performances in the running events to run up a score of 4909 points. Bender now moves to the #4 position in UCSB history in the event.
  • Vaziri's 4:00.01 Mile Leads Gauchos at UCLA Legends Invite

    UCSB senior Shyan Vaziri won the men's elite mile at the UCLA Legends Distance Carnival Friday evening, April 1st, setting the stage for a successful weekend of track and field for the Gauchos. Vaziri came within two-hundreths of a second away from breaking the magical four minute barrier in the mile but his converted 1500m time of 3:43.23 will become the new UCSB record in the event.

  • Nelson Scores 7097 in Sam Adams Decathlon; Bender and Usgaard Roll in Heptathlon

    Competing in a field of seventeen decathletes at the Sam Adams Multi, UCSB sophomore Tyler Neslon held the lead through seven events. Going up against twelve post-collegiate athletes, Nelson gave way in the pole vault but would go on to record the first seven thousand point score of his career, finishing with 7097, the third best score on the new decathlon scoring tables in school history.
  • Multis to Compete at Sam Adams; Squad Set to Compete at UCLA

    While the bulk of the UCSB track and field team is at UCLA taking on a loaded field at the Bruin Legends Invitational, the Gaucho decathletes and heptathletes will contest the combined evets at the Sam Adams Invitational, hosted by Westmont College.
