Gauchos Sweep UC Davis in The Thunderdome

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— The UC Santa Barbara Women's Volleyball team improved to 14-3 in Big West play Friday night sweeping UC Davis in straight sets. The Gauchos have now defeated all 11 conference teams and have swept four season series.

ON THE STAT SHEET

  • Michelle Ohwobete led all players with 16 kills and added four aces, four digs, and three blocks
  • Macall Peed led all players with 15 digs and Deni Wilson top the charts with seven blocks
  • UCSB outhit UC Davis .327 to .229 and out blocked the visitor 11-4 while adding nine aces

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set (26-24 UCSB)

  • The opening set was the closest contest of the night with the Aggies leading for most of the frame
  • Down 20-17,  head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch called a key timeout and the Gauchos planted their feet and posted a 3-0 run to tie it
  • UC Davis held set point at 24-23 but another 3-0 run for UCSB capped off by back-to-back aces from Briana McKnight gave the Gauchos the early lead
  • UCSB converted on 72% of its sideout opportunities in the set

 

Second Set (25-15 UCSB)

  • The Aggies jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second set but a 5-0 run for the Gauchos gave them a lead that they never gave back
  • UCSB hit a match-high .520 as a team sending down 15 kills on just 25 swings
  • An ace by Ennis gave UCSB a commanding 2-0 lead

 

Third Set (25-19 UCSB)

  • The Aggies jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the final set but a 5-0 run for the Gauchos gave them a lead that they never gave back
  • UC Davis got to as close as one point at 19-18 but McKnight and Tallulah Froley posted a medley of kills to give the Gauchos another big 5-0 run that all but secured the match for UCSB

The Gauchos are back in the Thunderdome tomorrow night when UC Riverside rolls into to town for senior night. First serve is set for 7 PM.
