SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Hosting CSUN on Tuesday night at the Thunderdome, the UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team headed into Thanksgiving break with a match and season sweep over the Matadors, 25-19, 25-20, 25-18.

The Gauchos will head into Friday's regular season finale against Hawaii with a record of 20-9 overall and 16-3 in the Big West, while CSUN falls to 9-22 overall, 4-15 conference.

  • Michelle Ohwobote had a team-leading 12 kills (.273), reaching double-figures for the 12th time in 14 matches, despite seven of those matches ending in just three sets. She also added 14 digs for her 11th double-double of the year.
  • Briana McKnight backed up Ohwobote with 10 kills on an efficient .360 hitting percentage.
  • Julia Shepherd saw significant playing time for the second straight match. The redshirt freshman finished as the third Gaucho in double-figures with a season-best 10 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1: 25-19 (UCSB)

  • Playing with some of its usual starters, Santa Barbara got out to a hot start regardless. Megan Shimoda came off the bench to serve up some heaters, landing an ace to make it 8-2 just 10 points in. She assisted on a Julia Shepherd kill on the next point.
  • The Gauchos were in control throughout, but the Matadors had one run in them, cutting it to three points on several occasions late. UCSB would score the final three points of the set though, winning it on a McKnight kill.

Set 2: 25-20 (UCSB)

  • For the second straight set, UCSB jumped out to an 8-2 advantage.
  • The lead grew to as many as 10 points on multiple occasions. Kristina Pepek later took a set from Mehana Ma'a to end things 25-20.

Set 3: 25-18 (UCSB)

  • The Matadors put up their biggest fight in set three, but with the score tied 11-11, the Gauchos pulled away with six straight points with Peed at the service line.
  • McKnight put away back-to-back kills in another 4-0 run later in the set before clinching the sweep with the final point to give UCSB the 25-18 win.
