SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2019-20 season, head coach Serela Kay announced on Friday.
The Gauchos are looking to build on last season's 22-8 record, including a 10-1 start to the year, that saw them finish in third place at the Big West Tournament.
Matches with UCLA and Michigan highlight the tournament portion of the schedule, and home matchups against CSUN, Hawai'i and UC Davis will provide fans with chances to watch the team compete for the top spot in the Big West at Campus Pool.
The Gauchos' season kicks off in just a few weeks as they travel to UC Irvine for the Anteaters' fall invitational on Nov. 23.
UCSB won't be back in action until Jan. 17, in which the team will play five matches in three days at the UCSB Winter Invitational, tangling with the likes of UCLA, Cal, and Michigan. This year, ten teams will compete in the tournament, competing in 20 matches at both Campus Pool and the UCSB Recreational Center.
The following week, the Gauchos take to Ann Arbor, Mich. to partake in the Michigan Invitational.
Two more tournaments take place in February, as Santa Barbara competes at the Triton Invitational in San Diego on Feb. 8 and 9 before heading to UC Irvine from Feb. 21-23 for the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.
The Claremont Convergence tournament begins action in the month of March on the 6th, before UCSB opens conference play against CSUN at home on March 7.
Later in March, UCSB plays four road games in five days, playing at Whittier on the 24th, facing UCLA in an exhibition on the 25th, heading to Concordia on the 27th, and wrapping up at UC San Diego on the 28th.
The first half of April sees the Big West regular season come to a close, as the Gauchos head to UC Irvine on the 5th before back-to-back home matches against Hawai'i and UC Davis on the 10th and 11th, with the latter being the team's senior day.
The final game in the Gauchos' conference season will see UCSB head south to Long Beach State on April 18.
From there, head coach Kay's team travels to Hawai'i for the Big West Tournament, taking place from April 23-25, at the team will battle for its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2016.
If successful in Honolulu, the Gauchos would head to Stockton for the NCAA Tournament from May 8-10.
